The politics Of Forest Gardening

As the Climate Emergency risks facing the UK increases, now is the time to imagine and take action. For me, forest gardening is a large part of this response. It is essentially the creation of edible ecosystems, creating resilient food systems and tackling the Ecological Emergency.

I have started work on a school forest garden, and also have been landscaping a local eco-home development. I want to join these dots together and extend forest gardening into the wider community.

To that end, local Community Councils (equivalent to Parish Councils in England) seem like an ideal place to start — bringing together local people, connections and skills for a common cause:

A darker shade of pink

The Red Valerian (Centranthus ruber) this year seems a remarkable shade of darkest pink. I have also noticed lots of White Red Valerian in the nearby village of St Dogmaels, I’m assuming this is a sport rather than cultivated as it scattered throughout the village.

It is a neophyte, a relatively recent introduction, first recorded sighting in 1763 in the UK. And it is also a forest garden plant as well, with edible leaves. When I have tried them, I found them rather bitter, maybe I left it too late in the season as many plants become more bitter as summer progresses and fresh growth hardens.
