Livestream—Creating a Forest Garden for a School
Backyard Forest News — Creating a School’s Forest Garden
Forest Garden Livestream
Wednesday 5th May, 10am BST
School Forest Garden
I’m doing some voluntary work for my local primary school, helping them to create a forest garden in the corner of the sports field.
In this week’s livestream, I’ll go through my process for creating a new forest garden, and why a school is such an interesting proposition (spoiler: it’s all about the little people).
As well as the tools (like Simplenote, Google Sheets, Cloudinary and QCAD), I’ll take a critical look at the approach and the importance of inclusion in the process, and also how such a project can extend out into the community.
There will be an informal Zoom chat after the livestream at 10.30am, all welcome.

Garden Wild Spreadsheet
Gardening with UK native wild flowers is the next big horticultural trend. And to stay ahead of the trends, you will be needing my Garden Wild Spreadsheet, an ever-expanding list of wild flowers, gorgeously providing habitat and food to our native wildlife. Use the spreadsheet to help you create an abundance of planting lists.
Some people say that native plants aren’t essential for healthy ecosystems in a garden. Yes, we do need diversity and habitat but we also overwhelmingly need food sources for insects. In the words of Margaret Roach, we need to “grow insects”.
The spreadsheet is an off-shoot of the Garden Wild Flower Gallery project, which aims to create both artful and reference photographs. We’ve applied for funding for the project, and we also have a GoFundMe page where you can make a one-off donation.
